Worcestershire Royal sits off the ring road
Worcestershire Royal is on Charles Hastings Way, east of the centre and reached from the ring road rather than from any street you would call central. From the middle of the city it is a short drive or a bus ride, and it is not a walk, whatever the map suggests. Worth knowing before you pick somewhere on the strength of a postcode alone.
Parking, permits and shift changeover
Hospital parking is the detail people underestimate. Staff spaces are permit controlled and the visitor car parks fill through the middle of the day, so arriving at the wrong hour can cost you twenty minutes you had not planned for. Coming in from a flat in the city, the ring road approach is usually easier than cutting through the centre at rush hour.
The university and placement bases
The University of Worcester is spread across the city, with much of the health teaching on the St John's side of the river and a good deal of clinical placement work based at the education centre on the hospital site. If you are moving between the two in a week, you are crossing the Severn regularly, and that matters more than the mileage does.
Nights, and sleeping through the day
On nights, the area matters less than the specific flat. The centre is quiet on a Tuesday and not on a Friday, Friar Street and the quay have pubs, and a bright room with thin curtains is no use to you at two in the afternoon. Which way it faces, how close the road is and what the blackout is like are the questions worth asking first.
Eating after a late finish
Worcester shuts early. After a late shift the centre is mostly dark, a handful of takeaways on the main roads keep going, and the large supermarkets close well before midnight. It means the kitchen where you are staying earns its keep here in a way it might not in a city with a proper late night trade. Stock it at the weekend and you stop thinking about it.
The postcode people pick first
The common error is choosing the address closest to the hospital and nothing else. The streets backing onto the ring road are near, but near is no use if there is nowhere to buy milk and the car park you need is on the far side of the site anyway. A clean run in, plus shops you can reach on foot, usually beats a shorter line on the map.
The rest of the trust, and the county
Worcestershire Royal is not the only place a placement lands. The acute trust also covers the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch and the site at Kidderminster, and there are community hospitals at Malvern, Evesham, Pershore and Tenbury. If your rota moves you between them, Worcester works as a base because it is central to the county, but check which site each week actually puts you at.
Somewhere to walk off a shift
Worcester Woods Country Park sits off the ring road close to the hospital, which is worth more than it sounds when you come off a night and need twenty minutes outside before you can sleep. The cathedral green does the same job on the other side of town. The green space here is close to hand rather than something you have to drive out to find.

How long can I stay?
