The University of Nottingham is out at University Park and Nottingham Trent is in the middle of the city, and between them they change the feel of the year. Term time is busier and better for anything that needs a crowd. Summer empties large parts of the west side. Stay long enough and you watch the switch happen over about a week.
Getting out at weekends
The Peak District is west, roughly an hour by car on the A52 through Derby, or by train to Derby and then up the Derwent valley. Sherwood Forest and the Major Oak are north at Edwinstowe and that is a drive. Closer in, Attenborough Nature Reserve and the Trent path running from Trent Bridge out towards Beeston are both reachable on foot or by train.
When a routine sets in
After a few weeks you stop navigating and start having habits: the same walk into town, a gym, a coffee place, a bus whose timing you know. Two practical notes. Nottingham is hillier than it looks the moment you head north out of the centre. And the city goes quiet early on a Sunday, so a Saturday shop becomes a habit worth forming.
The unglamorous domestic week
A month in, it is laundry, bins and a food shop rather than days out. Drying clothes indoors is the standing problem through an English winter, so a machine in the flat and somewhere to hang things matters more than it sounds. Supermarket delivery covers the city and most of the suburbs. None of that shows in a photograph and all of it decides the month.
Where you end up eating
The novelty wears off in about a fortnight and you settle into a short list. Hockley holds most of the independents, Sneinton Market fills up at weekends, and the takeaways are strung along Mansfield Road and Derby Road rather than in the middle. Midweek, kitchens in the centre stop serving earlier than you would expect from a city this size.
Enough on for a month
The evenings hold up better than the population would suggest. The Playhouse, the Theatre Royal and the Royal Concert Hall sit within a few streets of each other, Broadway in Hockley shows what the multiplexes will not, and the arena takes the touring shows. Lakeside Arts is out at the university. Several weeks can pass without any need to leave.
The city has a basement
Nottingham stands on soft sandstone and there are hundreds of man made caves cut underneath it, some below shops and pubs, with a set of them open to walk round near the Broadmarsh site. It explains the cellars, the sudden climbs out of the centre and why some buildings sit at odd levels. After a while you notice where the rock breaks through.
