Stratford is a base, not a hospital town
Stratford Hospital handles outpatient and community services. The acute work, the wards and the on-call rotas happen at Warwick Hospital to the north or the Alexandra at Redditch to the west, and both are a drive. If you are placed at either, basing yourself here is a decision about where you want to spend the hours you are not working, rather than a short walk to the door.
The drive to Warwick and Redditch
Warwick is a straight run north on the A46 and the road moves once you are on it, which matters more at half six in the morning than the mileage does. Redditch is the longer journey, west and then north, and it is the one people underestimate. Neither is difficult in the early hours. Both slow down in the school run and on a summer Saturday.
Parking where you actually sleep
Streets in the centre are permit controlled and the public car parks are pay and display, priced for visitors rather than for someone staying twelve weeks. If you are driving to a hospital site every day, off-street parking is the first thing to establish, because a good flat you cannot reliably leave a car at will wear you down by the second week.
Days off and daylight sleep
Coming off nights, you will be trying to sleep while the town is at its busiest. The centre carries coach parties, the riverside is loud on a warm afternoon and the streets near the theatres stay lively into the evening. Move out a little and it goes properly quiet. A week between shifts here
The practical rhythm takes a fortnight to learn. Most of the independent shops shut around five, so anything you forget means a run out to the larger stores on the edge of town. There is no round the clock supermarket. Finish a late and the realistic options are a takeaway or cooking for yourself, and uniforms mean washing at odd hours.
Pick the side of town, not the postcode
Stratford is small enough that people assume anywhere in it amounts to the same thing. For a commute it does not. The northern edge shortens the run up to Warwick. The western side is the sensible one for Redditch and Alcester. The middle, where the visitor streets are, helps with neither and adds the one way system to every journey you make.
A placement that starts in August
Arriving in high season gives you a misleading introduction. Car parks are full by mid morning, the crossing over the water is slow, and getting from one side of town to the other takes longer than the distance suggests. By November those same journeys are unremarkable. Judge the place on a wet Tuesday in term time rather than on your first weekend.
Back roads look quicker than they are
A sat nav will happily send you cross country towards Redditch or Alcester on unlit lanes with blind bends and standing water in winter, and it saves very little. People who do that journey regularly tend to stay on the main road even when it looks longer. Rural Warwickshire after dark is properly dark, and deer on the verge are not unusual.
