Somewhere to go on Saturdays
Over several weeks you want a default weekend. Elvaston Castle country park sits just outside the city to the south east, Carsington Water is out past Ashbourne, and the hills begin not far north. Trains reach Sheffield, Nottingham and Birmingham directly if you would rather leave the car where it is for two days.
What is open after eight
Midweek, Derby shuts early. The Cathedral Quarter keeps its pubs going and Friar Gate wakes up at the weekend, but a Tuesday evening is quiet by nine. What the city does have is proper pubs rather than designed ones: the Brunswick and the Alexandra, both near the station, are old railway locals and worth more than any chain bar.
