The bit that usually decides it
An eleven week placement is not a tenancy, and it should not be treated like one.
That is the problem most people arrive with. A letting agent wants six months, a guarantor, referencing and a deposit, for a rotation that ends in March. A hotel works out expensive and you cannot cook. A room in a shared house means somebody else's television through the wall when you are trying to sleep at two in the afternoon after a run of nights. The Oxford Road corridor is one campus
Manchester Royal Infirmary, Saint Mary's, the Royal Eye Hospital and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital share a single site where Oxford Road meets Hathersage Road. If you are based there, somewhere on the southern edge of the city centre is a walk of roughly half an hour, or a few minutes on one of the buses that run down Oxford Road all day and most of the night.
What is a walk and what is not
The Oxford Road hospitals you can walk to from town. The Christie in Withington, Wythenshawe, Salford Royal on Stott Lane and North Manchester General in Crumpsall you cannot, whatever the map suggests. Those four are a bus, a tram plus a walk, or a car, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with a commute they never budgeted for.
Wythenshawe is out by the airport
Wythenshawe Hospital sits in south Manchester close to Manchester Airport, and from the city centre it is a real journey rather than a hop. The Metrolink airport line runs through Wythenshawe, but tram plus walk at six in the morning is slower than it looks on paper. For a long placement there, staying south rather than central is usually the more honest answer.
Salford Royal, and why people get it wrong
Salford Royal is on Stott Lane, west of the centre towards Eccles. It is not far in miles and it is not on a tram line either, so you are on a bus along the A6 or in the car on the M602. Drivers do fine outside the peak. If you are relying on public transport, check the actual route before you commit to an address.
North Manchester General and the Bury line
North Manchester General is in Crumpsall, north of the centre, and it is one of the few outlying sites with a usable rail answer: the Bury Metrolink line stops at Crumpsall and it is a short walk from there. That makes a central flat workable if your shifts land inside tram hours. Nights are a different question, because they usually do not.
Parking is the thing that wears you down
Staff parking here is rationed and the streets around the Oxford Road site and Rusholme are permit controlled, so arriving by car for a twelve hour shift is rarely as simple as it sounds. If you are driving in, ask about the permit position at your specific site before you assume it. If you are not, being within walking distance is worth paying for.
Sleeping while the city is awake
The flat that ruins a run of nights is the one that is perfectly quiet at nine in the evening and impossible at two in the afternoon. Oxford Road carries buses more or less constantly, the centre has deliveries and site work from seven, and a west facing bedroom is warm by four. Aspect, main road or not, and the quality of the blackout matter more than anything in the photographs.
Eating at half past three in the morning
The city centre is quieter after midnight than its reputation implies, and most of what stays open late is out along Wilmslow Road through Rusholme rather than in town. On nights that leaves you cooking, which makes a proper kitchen and a fridge you can fill on a day off worth more than being near restaurants you will never be awake for.

Which hospitals are actually reachable from here?
The MRI, Saint Mary's, the Royal Eye Hospital and the Children's Hospital sit together on Oxford Road, with the Christie in Withington and Wythenshawe out near the airport. Which one you are working at should decide where you stay, because they are not close to each other.
Can I park in Manchester?
Most of the city centre is permit or paid parking and a lot of apartment blocks have no allocated space at all. If you are bringing a car, ask about the specific property, because it is the single most common thing people get wrong here.
Which part of Manchester should I be in?
Most of what you would need day to day sits in the city centre, the Northern Quarter, Ancoats and the inner suburbs. Tell us where you need to be each morning rather than which postcode you fancy, and we will be honest about what is close to it and what only looks close on a map.
How easy is it to get around Manchester without a car?
Metrolink reaches Altrincham, Bury, Rochdale, MediaCity and the airport from the middle of the city, and Piccadilly puts London inside two hours.
What is there to do in Manchester on a day off?
The Northern Quarter, Ancoats, Castlefield and the museums are all walkable from a central base, and the Peak District is inside an hour by train or car. On a long stay the Peaks are what most people end up using at weekends.

What NHS staff ask us first.
Do I have to sign a tenancy agreement?
No. This is a booking, not a tenancy. There is no assured shorthold agreement, no guarantor, no referencing and no deposit to argue about at the end. You book the dates, you stay, you leave.
That is the main reason people on placement come to us rather than to a letting agent, who will usually want six months minimum for a rotation that runs eleven weeks.
Can the trust or my agency pay directly?
Yes. We invoice the trust, the bank or the agency directly, with a purchase order reference if they need one. Tell us who is paying when you enquire and we will set it up that way from the start rather than you paying and claiming back.
How close is it to my hospital?
It depends which one, and we will give you the real answer rather than a reassuring one. A central flat is walking distance or a short bus from the MRI, Saint Mary's, the Christie and the Children's Hospital. Wythenshawe is a proper commute from the centre. Salford Royal and North Manchester are manageable.

What if I am working nights?
Ask us about the specific property before booking. Which way the bedroom faces, whether it is on a main road, what the blackout is like. It is the single biggest difference between a placement you survive and one you do not, and it is not something a listing photograph tells you.
What if my rotation dates change?
They usually do, and we would rather know early than late. Message us instead of booking exact dates online and we can generally hold some flexibility on the end date. Extending is normally straightforward; shortening depends on how much notice we have.
Is it cheaper than a hotel for a long placement?
For anything beyond a week or so, yes, and the gap widens the longer you stay. Our rate drops as the stay gets longer, and you are not buying meals out every night because there is a kitchen. Give us your dates and we will give you a total rather than a nightly rate to multiply.
